Dr. Cletus Georges knows that many parents don’t realize the possibility of pediatric kidney disease. Even young children could be at risk of developing kidney problems, but often they’re for reasons unlike that of adults. They could be because of a congenital disability, a genetic issue triggered by infection, or even trauma. Sometimes they are caused by urine blockage and reflux.

Children at Risk

Dr. Cletus Georges also wants to show parents that some medicines may cause kidney problems. Certain risk factors make children more susceptible to kidney disease compared to others. A child could develop acute kidney disease if they have had significant blood loss, undergone surgery, or shock and physical trauma. If the child has had medication from previous diseases, this could cause the development of kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease could develop if the child has had a long-term blockage in the urinary tract, ensuring that your child has regular urine and bowel movement. Untreated diabetes and high blood pressure could also lead to kidney disease in kids.

Symptoms to Look for

Kids with acute kidney disease present symptoms like:

• Hemorrhaging or bloody diarrhea

• Stomach pain with a stomach mass

• Severe vomiting

• Fever, eye inflammation, and rashes

• Anemia or the appearance of pale skin

• Being unable to urinate or urinating far too frequently.

Dr. Cletus Georges adds that children who might have chronic kidney disease may present with:

• Stunted growth

• Poor appetite and vomiting

• Inability to urinate or urinating too frequently

• Anemia, pale skin

• Sensory issues such as hearing problems, headaches, irritability, and poor attention span

These symptoms may be caused by any number of issues or conditions, which is why Dr. Georges encourages parents to ensure that their kids go through regular health checkups. Through careful testing and being mindful of the child’s behavior, early signs of kidney problems may be detected and resolved before the situation worsens.
